Set myself a time limit of 3 hours from start to finish. Its suprising how the brain adapts. If I allowed myself all day I would have just taken more time about everything.

Finaly made a half decent speed painting tutorial to promote my Alla Prima course. Using an attractive looking model helps too. I think people are more inclined to be interested in anything with an image of a good looking woman.

Portrait of Kieth using time lapse feature using Canon D20. Made another mistake at the beginning, the video is a bit dark, saved way too many images, difficult to edit on the computer, file way too big.
Painted in an Alla Prima style, using a time lapse on a Canon D20 camera. Trying to figure out how to use the time lapse on the camera. Why is half the video is missing? because the settings were on manual and it took the images too dark. I used automatic settings on the camera for the part I used.

One day study using new brushes, Da Vinci Maestro 7900 Brush, it’s an extra long haired brush. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. There are little things that I noticed like they are quicker to clean and the long soft bristle doesn’t pull the wet paint off. Well worth it.

Used a restricted palette, alizarin, phthalo blue and green, cadmium yellow and orange burnt umber and white. Looking at using cooler colours in the face and more phthalo green along the bed bug line. 4 hours.

Below is a before and after self portrait, donated by one of the students after the portrait painting course. He used the original pose and the same medium to see how much he had progressed after attending the course.
A self portrait is probably the most difficult subjects to paint. The way we perceive ourselves effects our visual judgement. The challenge is to remain impartial and paint what you see. This is easier said than done.
The Academic discipline is a logical step by step process that helps the artist describe one visual element at a time, developing an objective way to describe reality
In the self portrait below, the student has clearly developed his visual language. Notice the difference in the proportions of the head, understanding of form, draughtsmanship and line weight.
