Rosemary and Co Artist Brushes
Rosemary and Co Artist Brushes were used for this portrait of Shelda. They’re very good quality brushes and super cheap, well worth the investment. I used the Chungking long haired, long handled filberts.
Limited Palette
Limited palette using Windsor and Newton, Indian red, yellow ochre, titanium white and mars black. I used the limited palette on the top two portraits, its surprising how much colour you can stretch out of such muted colour. The colours are also more harmonious giving them a quitter feel.

Students work Advanced Classical Realism Course
Here are some portrait drawings from the first Advanced Classical Realism Course. It was the first time the students have worked on a long pose from life. They did a good job considering it was their first time and had no prior experience.
The pose lasted 6 weeks which was a bit too long for some people. Next time the course will either be broken down into 2 x 3 week poses or drawing exercises for one half of each class and the sitter posing for the other half.
Artists and Illustrators July 2014
In this months article for Artists and Illustrators I discuss the steps of producing a Bistre underpainting. Bistre is known as the “wipe-out method”. A brown glaze is painted over a white canvas or board and then ‘wiped out’ to create the highlights. The shadows are built up using opaque paint and the half-tones are applied with a little colour on the brush allowing the warmth of the brown to show through the translucent glaze.
